Around 2020, when I started talking to Patrick about India Chapter.

Tell us a little about your work history/professional journey, and how it led you to buildingSMART.

I am a professional in the space of Digital Engineering and BIM. Digital interoperability, Data Longevity and Risk mitigations has always been a very important aspect of our consulting framework and that connected us to buildingSMART. Besides, I was always a fan of Patrick and his efforts Curve, hence learnt more about buildingSMART as I get to know him better.

What do you like the most about the work you do within your Chapter?

Community centric thinking and the ability to organize and bring the industry together to discuss BIM challenges.

What would you say are the biggest successes or milestones to date within your Chapter?

We are still in our infancy stage; however, the industry support we have received so far has been phenomenal.

What does openBIM mean to you personally?

Personally, to me, openBIM is an opportunity to make our project workflows more efficient, eliminate digital risks and make our project more resilient to challenges.

What overriding challenge(s) do you see the community facing today?

Lack of Clarity with reference to digital aspirations (relevant to them), OEM’s aspirations of controlling the ecosystem governance, increasing cost of technology and huge capacity gaps!

What challenge(s) do you encounter within your Chapter?

Converting the chapter from Entrepreneurial Mode to a more structured, dedicated, and professionally managed structure.

What do you see as the main opportunities for your market?

Training and Policy advocacy around openBIM.

With digitalization becoming more prevalent, how is your Chapter addressing the challenges and opportunities it brings?

We are doing this by bringing people (Industry) together. Recently we had organized Roundtable which had diverse perspectives on grass root level challenges and opportunities.

What are your visions and/or aspirations for the future, both for your Chapter and for buildingSMART internationally?

My vision is to see buildingSMART India and CDCPIndia, steering the BIM advocacy and policies in India besides becoming a leading Capacity Building Facilitator through buildingSMART training programs. For buildingSMART International, I would like to see the organization growing into a more powerful and stable organization with least external dependencies to undertake projects.

Updated in January 2025

buildingSMART International Chapter Leader Profile First name: Sunil Last name: Joshi Chapter: India Role in the Chapter: Chairperson Where are you based?
