There is a missing link in the IFC openBIM world when it comes to products. There is currently no official MVD for exchanging information about one or several products using IFC. All existing MVD’s are structural project or building based. On the other hand, there is a strong wish from product manufacturers to provide their products in an openBIM format. The CEN created COD (Construction Object Definition) could enable pure product information to be provided in an IFC-based data format. Similar to RFA in Revit or GDL in ArchiCAD, COD could be developed as the solution for this need. This activity proposal is about a technical and applicational proof of concept of COD in buildingSMART as a first step. A second step would be an extension or re-creation of COD as an IFC for Products. These activities are expected to include the delivery of content and documentation to support sufficient data modelling and exchange of electrical engineering systems among all project stakeholders during the entire life cycle of a built asset project.

Electrical

Nov 8, 2023

The openBIM for Electrical Engineering Activity Proposal has been reviewed and has been endorsed by the Standards Committee.

Approved

The Standards Committee feedback and results can be viewed using the following link.

View Report

Electrical

Dec 5, 2023

The DocumentsAPI is approved and published as a final standard.

Approved

The DocumentsAPI Standard is approved by the Standards Committee Executive as final standard.

Technical

Feb 15, 2024

The "Use case 2.06 - Collision check & mechanical integration of medium voltage distribution systems in a building" Activity Proposal is now out for review by the Standards Committee.

Out for Review

The "Use case 2.06 - Collision check & mechanical integration of medium voltage distribution systems in a building" Activity Proposal is now out for review by the Standards Committee. We need more openBIM Education if we are to apply it effectively in our workplaces.
A. Agreed. The Professional Certification Practitioner and Management modules will be coming out soon, and I definitely intend to do one of them. We strongly recommend that all Domain Leaders do a module even if it is the Foundation, and prior to that the Entry level (Both of which are already available).

Q. We need clearer explanation of the overall governance and who is responsible for doing what, including the management of the links between the programs and the Domains.
A. The latest revision to the bSI Process is in preparation now and it will include all this. I am going to release it with an overview and then a series of Annexes focusing on individual programs such as: The Strategic Projects, Domains Program, Organisational Structure, etc.

Q. We need to know what is happening in the Chapters with regards to Domain mirroring and who is involved?
A. We cannot provide a database of Chapter members but we do encourage use of the new bSI Communications portal to build up those communication links. This is in its early stages, but you can find it here.

Q. The core standards need developing if we are going to achieve maximum benefit from openBIM. IFC 5 for example is much needed.
A. Yes. When a Domain identifies a need for IFC improvement, following a gap analysis of requirements vs capability, you can make requests through GitHub (The link is in the process presentation). Importantly, you can directly support and accelerate this work by providing sponsorship funding to the Strategic Project team who are working on defining IFC 5, and other core standards and services.

Q. The bSDD library definition and identification of legitimate versions needs to be improved.
A. OK. We’ll take this point to our bSDD Product Manager and get a fuller response. It may be part of the bSDD Strategic Project scope which we are seeking funding for.

Q. How are Domain portfolios decided? Some seem very generic whereas others are more sector specific. Also, why wouldn’t Hospital or Airport say, be a project within Building or Infrastructure?
A. Its partly historical and partly living with the ambiguity. Hospital and Airport are programs because they will contain multiple projects. However, they would only concentrate on entities that are very specific to their sector. For example, baggage handling equipment would be legitimate in Airport but foundations or roofing (say) would not. It is also a way of enabling more members with industry knowledge, to sit on Executive Committees and contribute their leadership.

Q. Should the Domains be assisting Software Vendors to understand systems development? We are not really equipped to do so.
A. This is really a role for the Implementors Forum and the General Assembly of Implementors.

We look forward to continuing to work with you on the adoption of openBIM workflows.

All Domains

Jul 3, 2025

Occupant Movement Analysis IDS Technical Report is out for final review

Out for Review

The Fire Safety project team working under the management of the bSI Building Domain steering committee has issued a final technical report for the IDS for Occupant Movement Analysis project. It also authorised sharing the consultation results, including the Chapters’ letter, on which the SCE remains neutral.

View Report

All Domains

Sep 24, 2025

Occupant Movement Analysis Technical Report

Approved

The Standards Committee return on the votes was 33 Yes 3 No which achieves the 65% pass rate threshold.

View Report

Building

Oct 17, 2025

Voting for the Standards Committee Executive is now open

Consultation

The buildingSMART International Community is invited to elect five additional members to the Standards Committee Executive (SCE).
This is an important governance body for managing the development of openBIM Standards and Services.

Appendix 3, §3.2 of the Bye-Laws states that eligible nominees must:
• Demonstrate relevant technical expertise or industry user perspective in support of bSI’s standardisation activities
• Show commitment to the mission of buildingSMART
• Have experience in open collaboration and international standardisation
• Be able to contribute actively, including attending monthly online meetings and occasional preparation or follow-up work

The responsibilities of the SCE include:
• To design and keep up to date appropriate business processes for the smooth and effective running of the Solutions & Standards program.
• To administer the day-to-day operation of the Solutions & Standards program
• To maintain and keep up to date a schedule of activities in the Solutions & Standards Work Program.
• To act as the formal liaison committee for the Standards Committee with third parties such as ISO and OGC
[Note: Many of these activities are delegated with the SCE providing oversight]

Please review the nominees from this link and contact your local Standards Committee representative to express your preference.

Nov 12, 2025

All Domains

Nov 13, 2025

Standards Committee Executive Election Results

Approved

The voting for the Standards Committee Executive (SCE) has now concluded.
